Today's Reading: Mark 15

Happy M-M-M-M-Monday, SHINE girls! Well, we have finally caught up in our reading! Hallelujah and a high five!

We are back on track to our one chapter a day reading plan. The only change is that we now have weekend reading.

Did you get your weekend reading in? I crammed it all in Sunday night. Does that count?

Of course, the reading was fascinating, yet devastating at the same time. I mean, how many times have we read the story about Jesus and His disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane just before His betrayal and crucifixion.

However, because the Word is living, breathing, active, and sharper than a sword...it's fresh and new again each time we read it! I'm blown away by it all.  It's hard to fathom the depths of His love for us, isn't it?

In our reading yesterday, we see Jesus scolding Peter for falling asleep while he was supposed to be keeping watch and praying.

Here is what Jesus said to Peter in Ch. 14 verse 37-38: "Are you asleep? Could you not keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

Okay, now let's just park right there. I could just hang my Old Navy pea green wool scarf right there on that last sentence and stay there until Kingdom Come.

"The Spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

Is it just little ol' me, or can you relate to this too?

For example: A week ago today, some friends and I started a little workout accountability group. We are given a challenge to do daily and we all check in with each other at the end of the day. Sounds easy, right?

Umm, no. This is where the spirit is willing, but the body is weak part comes in.

It's h-a-r-d. Like, really hard.

My bottom wants to plop back into that chair and rest. However, my mind is envisioning skinny jeans, and a really cute smaller bathing suit for next Summer.

My flesh is screaming: "Stopppp!".

My mind is screaming: "Get up and MOVE, sista!"

It's like having a split personality. Cybil, anyone?

Okay, let me just unbutton these tight jeans and lay it all out there on that shiny pink table top:

It's not just exercise that my body is weak. (shocker!)

It's in a LOT of other areas. Did I say a lot? Yeah, that's what I meant.

Can you relate?

Maybe you can't relate to the exercise thing. Let's name a few things that us double X chromosome humans have some weaknesses for:

  • food (that chocolate cupcake really needs me. oh, and the strawberry one too.)
  • spending (charging is still spending...unfortunately. i often forget this.)
  • lust (not just sexual...lust comes in many forms. keep your eyes open for this one)
  • jealousy (suddenly my new pocket book looks shabby next to hers)
  • not holding our little pink tongues when we need to (i just need to keep masking tape in my pocket for this one)
  • gossip (yeah, we don't need an explanation)
  • flattery (feeds our people approval addictions)
  • exaggeration (this stems from pride..ouch!)
  • little white lies (they are still lies)
  • judging other women (silently, of course. makes us feel better about ourselves. sad, but true)
  • self hatred (never satisfied with our bodies, faces, personalities, motherhood, etc.)

Oh, the list goes on but I will stop there.

Here's the good news:

"But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us."
Romans 8:37

Read it one more time.

We don't just conquer these things. We OVERWHELMINGLY conquer these things!

**okay, step away from your screen and stand up and shout!!**

Yes, we are flesh. Yes, we are weak.

Yes, we have the power to overcome!

Yes, we have the power to conquer!

"I have been crucified with Christ;
and it is no longer I that live, but Christ living in me:
and that life which I now live in the flesh I live in faith,
the faith which is in the Son of God,
who loved me, and gave himself up for me."
Galatians 2:20

Starting today, Monday November 12th, let's kick that flesh to the curb!

We have the power of Christ and our spirit is willing. That's all we need.
